I have been a film editor and post-production sound engineer for many years so manufacturers often ask me to beta test and evaluate their audio and video products. When I'm editing video or audio I often have to wear headphones for 10-12 hours at a stretch so I take headphones very seriously... you might even say that I'm a professional headphone-wearer. Over the years I've product-tested close to a hundred headphones from $20 - $1000 and thanks to B&O I have a new favorite! My previous fav was the Senneheiser HD700 which is a remarkable pair of headphones, but these new BeoPlay H8 headphones have some features that elevate them to the top of my list. First off, I generally don't take packaging into consideration when I evaluate headphones, but the packaging for these is extremely sophisticated while being very efficient. The packaging really shows the headphones off to great effect... they are impressive from the moment you lay your eyes on them. For that reason, I have high expectations and I found material shortcomings. First, though, I want to mention the positives. Except as noted below, the build quality is lovely. There are few items that I own that ooze this degree of class and beauty. I simply adore it. The moving components slide smooth, the leather is sumptuous, and the color choice is a home run. The touch controls are great. The ability to adjust volume and tracks was simple and liberating. Nicely done. I deemed the sound quality to be very good. Now for the negatives. I have to say that my expectations of the noise cancelling were not met. I tested the Bose noise-cancelling headphones, the Quitecomfort 25, and the noise blocking was dramatic. I expected the same results here but it was just okay. Enter the Bang & Olufsen BeoPlay H8, a stunning new addition from one of the pioneers in audio and design. Like the H6, the H8 has the same striking packaging presentation where as the headphones lay flat and showcases all of the premium workmanship from Bang & Olufsen.
